“Climate
Change and the Role of Concentrating Solar Power” with Dr. Chuck
Kutscher Thursday, April 30, in Golden, and
Online Via Live Webcast
The next
public meeting of the Colorado Renewable Energy Society will feature
NREL scientist Chuck Kutscher, who will discuss “Climate Change and
the Role of Concentrating Solar Power.”
Most power
plants use fossil fuels to boil water. The steam from the boiling
water spins a large turbine, which drives a generator to produce
electricity. But a new generation of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP)
plants uses the sun as a heat source. CSP already plays an
increasingly important role in the fight against climate change, and
that role will grow with improved technologies, policies, and
economics. Join CRES and one of the world's leading CSP experts to
find out how this will happen.
Dr. Chuck
Kutscher is a Principal Engineer and Manager of the Thermal Systems
Group at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden,
Colorado where he currently leads the research on parabolic trough
solar collector systems. He is a Past Chair of the American Solar
Energy Society (ASES) and was General Chair of the SOLAR 2006
national solar energy conference, which led to the ASES report,
Tackling Climate Change in the U.S. (available at
www.ases.org/climatechange). In January 2009, Dr. Kutscher won the
Governor’s Excellence in Renewable Energy Individual Award.
Dr. Kutscher
is an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder,
where he developed a course entitled “Climate Change Solutions,” and
he writes a regular column about climate change for SOLAR TODAY
magazine. He has given many presentations around the country on
climate change solutions and Concentrating Solar Power.
This meeting
will take place on Thursday, April 30, 7:00 PM, at the Jefferson
Unitarian Church, 14350 West 32nd Avenue (about a mile west of I-70)
in Golden. PLEASE CARPOOL AND ARRIVE EARLY, as the JUC parking lot
can fill up quite quickly. There are overflow lots at the park about
two blocks west of the JUC, and in the Applewood Shopping Center on
the east side of I-70 (although you'll still probably have to
carpool from there).
Those who
cannot join us in person can log on to our Live Webcast. Our
regional groups in Fort Collins, Colorado Springs, and Pueblo will
host viewings of this webcast, and as many as twelve more
connections will be available. If you are outside West Denver (and
the areas mentioned above) and would like to host your own viewing
of this webcast, please contact CRES at
webcast@cres-energy.org.
Complete
information about this meeting and webcast are available on the CRES
website:

And if you're
not available at all on Thursday night, you can view the recorded
webcast that will be on the CRES Event Archives by the following

There’s Still Time to submit your ideas for the
Colorado Renewable Energy Conference!
This year’s
Colorado Renewable Energy Conference will be held on the weekend of
August 28-30 at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. The
Conference Committee has received excellent responses to the Call
for Papers and thanks everyone who has submitted abstracts to date.
Inasmuch as the day-job commitments of members of the Review
Committee have pushed back the timeline for review, the Committee
has decided to extend the deadline for abstract submittals to this
Friday, May 1st.
The theme of
this year’s Conference is “Clean Energy: Pathways to a Low-Carbon
Footprint.” Abstracts should describe presentations, papers and
panel discussions regarding clean energy and energy efficiency
technologies, measures, policies, programs and analytical tools.
Selected papers, presentations and panel discussions will be
showcased at the Conference on Saturday, August 29. They may pertain
to one or all energy-consuming sectors – transportation, buildings,
utilities, government-owned facilities, cities and counties, etc.
If you are
interested in making a presentation or organizing a panel
discussion, please submit an abstract (250 words maximum) to all
three Review Committee co-chairs by May 1: Carol Tombari -
coloradotombaris@earthlink.net ; Doug Seiter -
dlseiter@comcast.net ; and
Gerry Fitzpatrick -
fitzpgb@comcast.net.
Tracks and
groupings will be decided after presentation topics are selected.
CRES intends to collect presentations for the CRES website, and for
DVD distribution after the Conference.

ACTION ALERT: Support Legislation for
More Energy Efficiency from Rural Co-op Utilities!
On April 7,
CRES Policy Committee Chair Tom Konrad testified at the State
Legislature in favor of HB09-1323 on behalf of CRES and the Energy
Efficiency Business Coalition. This bill would require all rural
electric coops with more than 100,000 members (currently, this would
only apply to the Intermountain Rural Electric Association – IREA –
serving the outer suburbs of Metro Denver) to have an energy
efficiency program with the following targets: a total of 2% savings
by 2012; 5% savings by 2015; and 10% savings by 2020. This bill was
hard fought, with hours of testimony on both sides… the longest of
any bill we've seen debated in committee! In the end, however, the
committee successfully voted to send the bill on to Appropriations,
which passed it on to the House Committee of the Whole for a vote.
This bill is
ONE VOTE SHORT of the majority needed to pass! To help ensure the
bill passes, Clean Energy and Energy Efficiency supporters should
contact the following representatives and ask them to vote for the
bill:

April
Update from the CRES Policy
Committee
RE
for FasTracks: On April 21, CRES Policy Committee Member
and longtime transit and renewable energy activist Bob Wilson
organized several volunteers from several organizations to testify
in support of an amendment to the Request for Proposals RTD is
putting out for the planned Gold Line to Arvada and East Corridor to
DIA. These lines will be fully electrified, and the amendment
stipulates that bidders must include a renewable energy powered
option. CRES sent a letter in support of this amendment in February.
CRES Policy
Committee Chair Tom Konrad testified on behalf of
CRES, and Policy Committee member Lynn Greene also
appeared and testified on her own behalf, while CRES Chapter Rep
John Hambright testified on behalf of the Jefferson
Unitarian Church Green Task Force. A Sierra Club representative and
a member of the public also spoke in favor. The RTD board was
impressed with the turnout and organization, and the amendment to
require a Renewable Energy option passed.
CRES thanks
Tom Konrad and the entire Policy Committee for their exceptional
efforts during this hectic session of the Colorado State
Legislature!
